Journalists among at least 20 killed by Israeli attack on Gaza hospital

AT least 20 people have been killed, including five journalists, in an Israeli strike on a hospital in Gaza.

Several people were killed in an initial strike at the Nasser Medical Complex in southern Gaza on Monday morning, with others killed in a second strike which happened as rescuers attended the scene, Gaza's Civil Defence said.

The hospital is the last major remaining hospital in southern Gaza following Israel's brutal bombardment of the enclave, with around 600,000 Palestinians relying on it.

Later on Monday, a fifth journalist was reported killed. Ahmed Abu Aziz, who worked with Quds Network and other media outlets, died after being wounded in the attack, Al Jazeera reports.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) also said that one of its medics was injured while tending to the wounded in Nasser Medical Complex, as the organisation shared a video on Twitter/X which showed a clearly marked PRCS rescue van marked with what appear to be bullet holes.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the attack.

Francesca Albanese, UN special rapporteur for Palestine, condemned the attack as she called on states to "stop this carnage".

She wrote on social media: “Rescuers killed in line of duty. Scenes like this unfold every moment in Gaza, often unseen, largely undocumented. I beg states: how much more must be witnessed before you act to stop this carnage? Break the blockade. Impose an Arms Embargo. Impose Sanctions."

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), a charity which supports vital services at Nasser Hospital, said its teams had been safely evacuated from the complex.

"Israeli military attacks on healthcare facilities are a show of the impunity it is afforded by international leaders and governments," a statement from MAP said.

"They have attacked Nasser Hospital repeatedly since October 2023. Israel will continue its genocide in Gaza until it’s forced to stop."

MAP called on the UK Government to "urgently" suspend all arms transfers to Israel, as well as taking "decisive legal, diplomatic, and economic action to hold all perpetrators accountable".

The latest Israeli attack comes just weeks after at least seven journalists were targeted and killed in an Israeli strike, including prominent Al Jazeera reporter Anas Al-Sharif, who had previously been threatened by Israel.

The Gaza Government media office said the attack on Monday meant the number of journalists killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 7, 2023, has risen to 244.
