Jota in line for bumper wage rise as Celtic stand firm over transfer fee

Celtic are holding out for a club record transfer fee for prized asset Jota this summer.

The Scottish champions will stand firm over selling the Portuguese winger to the Middle East as they aim to pocket a sum worth over £25million.

Should they knock back £25m though, then the 24-year-old himself would be in line for a major wage hike in Glasgow's east end, according to a report.

The Daily Record states that Jota has a clause in his contract that will automatically trigger a weekly wage of between £35k to £45k should Celtic reject an offer of at least £25m.

Saudi giants Al-Ittihad are in talks with the Hoops over the attacker, with the former Benfica player already agreeing to personal terms.

It's said that Jota would earn around £10m per year, which works out to a staggering £192k a week.

While figures such as £20m and even £25m have been banded about over the past few days, Celtic want more.

They sold Kieran Tierney to Arsenal in 2019 for the latter price, and it's believed they're keen to smash that Scottish record.

The club is also braced for bids for Reo Hatate this summer.

Like Jota, the Japanese midfielder has also attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League.

The report claims his representatives have already told clubs in Saudi Arabia that Hatate has no interest in becoming the next big name to join the league, following in the footsteps of Jota, and other global stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, N'Golo Kante, and Karim Benzema.

Hatate is believed to want to continue his career in Europe. But Saudi sides could try tempt him with a huge wage offer.

Celtic will fend off any interest as best as they can with Jota already heading out of the exit door this month.
