Josh Groban to star in Broadway revival of ‘Sweeney Todd’ with Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford

NEW YORK — The cast of Broadway’s upcoming “Sweeney Todd” revival is a cut above.

Singer-actor Josh Groban will star in the 2023 production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” alongside Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford, producers announced Tuesday.

Preview performances of the musical begin Feb. 26 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on West 46th Street, while opening night is slated for March 26.

Featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Sweeney Todd” debuted on Broadway in 1979 and centers on a London barber who kills his customers. The original production won best musical at the Tony Awards in 1980.

The revival will feature a 26-piece orchestra and is being directed by Thomas Kail, while Alex Lacamoire is handling the music supervision. Kail and Lacamoire’s previous work include Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musicals “In the Heights” and “Hamilton.”

The role marks a Broadway return for Groban, who received a Tony nomination for best performance by a leading actor in a musical in 2017 for “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.″

Groban, 41, is also a Grammy nominee known for songs such as “You Raise Me Up” and “To Where You Are.”

Ashford, 37, received a Tony nomination for “Kinky Boots” in 2013, and won the award for best featured actress in a play at the 2015 ceremony for “You Can’t Take It With You.” She also starred on the CBS sitcom “B Positive.”

“Sweeney Todd” remains one of the most popular musicals by Sondheim, who died last November at age 91.

The Broadway revival’s tickets are available now through American Express Early Access, while the presale period starts Sept. 16. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Sept. 19.
