Jose Mourinho finally has what he wants at Tottenham but some tough decisions are coming his way

Injuries have played a major role in Tottenham's season since Jose Mourinho took on the hotseat in November.

Firstly losing Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko on New Year's Day to hamstring and knee issues, the duo were soon joined in the treatment room by Son Heung-min.

It then got even worse for the head coach prior to the crucial Champions League tie against RB Leipzig as January signing Steven Bergwijn limped off with an ankle problem following the draw at Burnley.

The quartet have since returned to action following the Premier League restart to give Mourinho quite a headache when it comes to his selection.

Jose Mourinho hoping Spurs can sort Dier contract

Initially having limited numbers to choose from upon his arrival and very few options on his bench to change a game, it is now totally different for the 57-year-old.

A look at the Tottenham bench from the recent games against Manchester United and West Ham has highlighted the incredible strength in depth he has in N17.

Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Harry Winks and Erik Lamela have been regular starters under both Mauricio Pochettino and Mourinho over the past few years but were on the bench against the Hammers.

Bergwijn, Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon and Gedson Fernandes, who were all signed for this season, were also substitutes, with back-up goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga also there.

The club's strength in depth doesn't end just there as Mourinho has youngsters Japhet Tanganga, who is currently out with a back injury, Oliver Skipp, Troy Parrott and Juan Foyth to pick from as well.

The head coach has quite a selection dilemma on his hands with everyone fit and available, but it is a good one to have and one all clubs with lofty ambitions require.

Spurs' form this season has highlighted that changes must be made in the summer if they are to get back to challenging at the top once again.

With Vertonghen on course to depart when his contract runs out, as well as a couple of other potential exits, Spurs have been linked with the likes of Southampton's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Chelsea's Willian.

Competition for Kane is also a must, while a new right-back is needed to either really push Serge Aurier or replace him in the starting XI given his lack of consistency.

A few quality signings here and there and Mourinho is going to have some squad to pick from when it comes to his selection throughout the 2020/21 campaign.

What is going to be problematic for him next season though is that he will have to give a number of players bad news quite regularly that they haven't made the matchday squad.

Helped at present by the new Premier League rule that allows team to name nine substitutes and make five changes due to the hectic schedule in order to complete the season, from the 2020/21 campaign it will go back to normal with seven players named on the bench.

Injuries, as they always do, will play their part for Spurs next season and limit Mourinho's numbers but, more often than not, he is going to have some tough decisions to make week in, week out.

However, that can only be a good thing for Spurs as they need plenty of competition in every position to ensure that they get back towards the top of the league table.

Having a bit of a selection quandary on his hands at present, it could get even worse for him come the start of the new season.
