Jose Mourinho delivered a warning to Manchester United on Anthony Martial concern

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho issued a warning to his old club about Anthony Martial's character back in 2018.

Following United's 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, current interim boss Ralf Rangnick claimed that Martial had refused to join the matchday squad for the trip to midlands.

The Frenchman snapped back on social media that he had never refused to play for United and would not 'disrespect' the club or the fans in this way.

Rangnick isn't the first United manager to have a run-in with Martial, with Mourinho infamously critical of the forward a few years ago.

Speaking to Univision, a US Spanish-language TV channel, about some of his United squad in 2018, Mourinho said: "They’re lacking maturity.

"For example, Luke Shaw. When I got here two years ago, the boy didn’t even know how to compete. Great potential, yes, but he doesn’t know how to compete.

"And when we talk about Luke Shaw, about Martial, about [Jesse] Lingard, about Marcus Rashford, we’re talking about boys with great potential but who still are lacking – a word I can’t say but you like to say a lot – having that [courage]. They’re lacking a bit of this.”

A year later, the Portuguese manager compared Martial to another player he coached, Real Madrid's Karim Benzema.

Speaking to L'Equipe, he added: "With Karim, it was not a conflict, I just wanted to help the player – an incredibly talented player – change his mindset, help him reach his maximum.

"To become a killer, a determined striker. I really enjoyed working with Karim.

"He [Martial] is a boy with a different personality.

"The thing I can say is that I hope he will reach a level commensurate with his real potential."
