Jordy Nelson to sign 1-day contract to retire as a Packer in August

The exact date isn’t set, but retired receiver Jordy Nelson is planning on traveling to Green Bay to sign a one-day deal and retire as a Packer at some point in August.

Nelson, now 34, told Melissa Brunner of WIBW in Topeka, Kansas that he’s expecting to sign the one-day contract in Green Bay during training camp.

“Yes, we’re heading back up there in August sometime, we haven’t pinpointed the date yet, but again we wanted to get our family back to Kansas and allow the kids to make it up there,” Nelson said. “So that is the plan to go up there during training camp, sign the one-day deal, retire as a Green Bay Packer and move on from there.”

Nelson announced in March that he’d be retiring from the NFL after 11 seasons. He played his final year in Oakland after his first 10 in Green Bay. The former second-round pick caught 550 passes for 7,848 yards and 69 touchdowns with the Packers and is all but guaranteed a spot in the team’s Hall of Fame.

Nelson will join former teammate John Kuhn as players signing one-day contracts to retire with the Packers this offseason.
