Jordan Henderson Rangers chances rated as Ajax exit path opens

Jordan Henderson is rated as likely to leave Ajax this summer, potentially paving the way for a role at Rangers.

With Steven Gerrard thought to be in contention to land the Gers manager's job, it had been reported he would like to bring in former Liverpool teammate Henderson and Ibrox legend Steven Davis as assistants.

Henderson is still a player with Ajax after cutting short his stint in Saudi Arabia, again with Gerrard, to sign for the Dutch giants last January.

He signed a two-and-a-half year contract at the time, which would take him through to the summer of 2026. However, Dutch journalist Mike Verweij believes he is not likely to see that out and could well leave imminently.

It is claimed Sunderland would also be an option after the 34-year-old was seen watching his former club overcome Sheffield United in the play-off final to make it back to the Premier League.

The reports from the Netherlands state Henderson is likely to join either Rangers or the Black Cats. Whether or not Gerrard sees him continuing to play or focusing purely on coaching would remain to be seen.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill was quizzed on the possibility of losing Davis from his backroom team.

He told The Belfast Telegraph: “That’s talk. Steven would be an asset to anyone’s staff, that’s all I can say.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty at Rangers clearly with ownership. I think that will be resolved shortly.

“I would understand why someone like Rangers would want Steven to be back involved. He brings a lot of stability, class and intelligence.

"His role as a coach, providing he was still able to work with us, wherever that may be I think would benefit him and we would get the benefit of that as well.

“He has been very good for me having him in. You can lean on him in terms of the team.

"He will give you an honest opinion on players and what better role model could we have for the players than having Steven around.

"Whatever he chooses to do next he will get my support but certainly I wouldn’t want to lose him from the backroom staff.”
