Jonathan Tiffoney hit with SFA charge over alleged David Cox mental health slur

Former Stenhousemuir defender Jonathan Tiffoney has been charged by the SFA over an alleged mental health slur which saw Albion Rovers’ David Cox walk out a match and retire.

The 29-year-old has been hit with a notice of complaint for excessive misconduct following the incident during a League Two match at Ochilview on April 29.

Tiffoney was accused of mocking Cox who left the stadium at half-time and announced his retirement from the game shortly afterwards.

The SFA immediately launched an investigation into the incident - with Tiffoney denying the allegations and claiming he was the victim of abuse from the Rovers dug out.

Cox, 32, has previously spoken out about his battle with depression.

Now the SFA have acted by charging Tiffoney, who was released by Stenhousemuir last week. The former Ayr, Alloa and Brechin player said last week he would co-operate fully with the SFA probe.

He now faces a disciplinary hearing on Thursday, June 3.

SFA Rule 77 states: “A recognised football body, club, official, Team Official, other member of Team Staff, player, match official or other person under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA shall, at all times, act in the best interests of Association Football.

"Furthermore such person or body shall not act in any manner which is improper or use any one, or a combination of, violent Conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour.”
