Jonathan Afolabi dents Dundee United title charge as Celtic loanee helps Dunfermline to shock win

Celtic loanee Jonathan Afolabi was on the scoresheet as Dundee United fell to a surprise 2-0 defeat to Dunfermline at East End Park.

Robbie Neilson's side went into the match with an 18-point lead at the top of the table, meaning it's surely only a matter of time until they mathematically seal their return to the top flight.

With Ayr United losing in midweek they needed six wins to be sure of being crowned champions, but the Terrors couldn't get the first of those today.

Lawrence Shankland has been getting all the headlines in the Championship this season, but Dunfermline's Kevin Nisbet has also been in prolific form.

It was the Pars striker who opened the scoring with his 23rd goal of the season, Nisbet rising highest to nod in a Kyle Turner cross.

The visitors were struggling to create chances against a well-drilled Dunfermline defence, and they were hit with a sucker punch after an hour.

Kilmarnock loanee Dom Thomas got free down the right and found Afolabi, who had the simple task of turning it home at the back post.

The on-loan Celtic striker was clearly delighted to score his first goal in senior football, as he picked up a booking for excessive celebration.

That effectively killed the game as a contest, with a below-par Dundee United struggling to create any clear-cut chances.

The result leaves them 18 points clear at the top of the Championship, though Inverness have two games in hand.
