Jon Flanagan sends Rangers fans 'unforgettable' thank you message as he retires after injury woe

Jon Flanagan has paid tribute to Rangers supporters after the right-back's announcement to retire from football.

The right-back started his career at Liverpool before spending two years at Ibrox between 2018-2020, where he competed with James Tavernier for a slot in former Anfield teammate Steven Gerrard's team. Stints abroad at Charleroi and HB Koge have followed, but the last 14 months have been spent battling a knee problem.

It's proven too much for Flanagan and he has sent his best wishes to Rangers fans after calling it a day, still only 29. He said in a statement: Unfortunately after careful consideration I have made the toughest decision I've ever had to make, to retire from professional football. The last 14 months I have tried everything possible to recover from my most recent knee surgery. However, ultimately my long term health has to come first, so following medical advice the right thing for me to do now is retire from the game.
