'Johnson makes difficult situation a dangerous one with illogical and reckless decision'

Easing Covid rules was always going to be challenging but the PM has turned a difficult situation into a dangerous one.

Instead of being guided by the science, Boris Johnson has rushed to lift all curbs, which will lead to a sharp increase in infections.

The Health Secretary has warned we could soon reach 100,000 new cases a day. This may lead to up to five million people being forced to self-isolate over the next five weeks.

Keir Starmer rightly pointed out we are heading for a summer of chaos and confusion.

The Government’s decision is illogical and risky. It will not help the economy – the justification for lifting the restrictions – if so many people are obliged to self-isolate.

Worse still, the rise in infections will lead to more deaths and more incidents of Long Covid.

This was a moment for caution and circumspection. The Prime Minister has acted rashly and recklessly.

Carefree Tories

Ten years ago David Cameron was presented with a plan to mend this country’s broken system of social care.

Andrew Dilnot’s proposals would have capped costs and ensured millions of elderly received the support they needed.

Shamefully, the Cameron government let the report gather dust.

Since then social care funding has stagnated, despite the number of people aged over 65 increasing by 1.7 million.

Boris Johnson has so far proved as useless as Mr Cameron. When entering Downing Street two years ago Mr Johnson vowed he had a clear plan to fix social care once and for all.

We are still waiting for him to deliver. Meanwhile an estimated 1.5 million aged 65 and over are not getting the care they need.

Final glory

Thw country expected and resilient England certainly delivered.

Gareth Southgate’s brilliant young team are through to the finals of the Euros.

History is in their grasp as the Three Lions tackle the ultimate Italian job in Sunday’s final.
