John Travolta's secret to 40-year friendship with Olivia Newton-John

Hollywood mainstay John Travolta has discussed his long-running friendship with Olivia Newton-John.

The Saturday Night Fever star, 65, revealed that his relationship with his Grease co-star has lasted so long since they worked on the hit 1978 musical together for a very simple reason.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, John said they never lost touch with each other.

John explained: "We love each other and when you love people you stay in touch."

The pair were reunited at the G'Day USA event in Beverly Hills on Saturday and he was excited to "rekindle" their rapport when they saw each other.

It was only last month that the friends dressed up in their instantly-recognisable costumes as Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson from Grease.

Olivia took to Instagram to share snaps of the pair in costume and they looked like they hadn't really aged a day since they were on set together.

Discussing their reunion ahead of the Meet 'n' Grease singalong event, John said it was "a glorious experience" and "one of the highlights of our lives to return as Sandy and Danny."

When talking about the emotional issue of Olivia's ongoing battle with breast cancer, John called her a "survivor" and said she had a "beautiful, natural approach to her life" with a positive outlook.

Meanwhile, Olivia has previously discussed her own outlook in regards to her medical condition and her means of treating it.

She said: "My tumours are receding or they’re going away or they’re staying the same. On a stage four metastatic breast cancer that’s pretty amazing. I don’t see it as a battle. I am winning."
