John Sheridan says he has to be hard on Waterford players when they switch off

It is third time lucky for Sligo Rovers and Waterford at the Showgrounds this evening.

The fixture was shelved before the shutdown and then postponed a second time this month when the Blues were rocked by Covid scares.

Both players that were tested returned negative results.

The Bit O’Red are looking to atone for Friday’s 3-0 defeat at Cork City but boss Liam Buckley said: “That scoreline was harsh."

Buckley continued: “We didn’t take our chances and Cork punished us. It’s a reminder you have to make the most of the opportunities you get.

“We’re looking to move on by getting the right outcome. It’s an important game and we’ve regrouped.

“But we’ve got to be more creative and get our focus right because we’re looking for the performance and result.”

Waterford almost pulled off a shock win at champions Dundalk on Friday but blew a 2-0 lead with seven minutes to go.

They settled for a point but could have lost as Dundalk were denied three times deep in injury-time.

Blues boss John Sheridan said: “We were good up until the two goals. The lads stuck to the game-plan and made life very difficult for a very good team.”

The ex-Republic of Ireland international didn’t hold back berating his own players during the game.

But Sheridan insists there’s nothing wrong with tough love, adding: “You have to be hard on them because they switch off too many times.”

Rovers are without injured quartet Will Seymore, Garry Buckley, Johnny Dunleavy and John Mahon while Kyle Callan-McFadden is a doubt.

Waterford goalkeeper Brian Murphy is unlikely to feature. The ex-Ireland squad man shipped a calf injury against Dundalk while Ali Coote was sent-off and is suspended.
