John Lundstram and the Rangers fringe men who could face being surplus to requirements at Ibrox

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be hoping to get some of the Nathan Patterson transfer fee to reinvest in his Rangers squad this month.

And he has already been quick to recruit with American international James Sands arriving at Ibrox, albeit on an initial 18-month loan.

But with a £23 million loss announced in the club’s annual accounts then it’s safe to say some of the cash will have to be banked.

Van Bronckhhorst won’t want to lose any key men and that was the beauty of the Patterson sale - losing a player that doesn’t immediately weaken the starting XI.

However, with the help of sporting director Ross Wilson, there is no doubt the club will still want to free up more funds to add to the squad.

That might not come from big fees such as the cash Everton paid for Patterson but from moving fringe men on to free up wages.

Is there money going into the pockets of current squad members that could be better spent elsewhere? Of course there is - like in all squads.

Here, Record Sport looks at those who might find themselves surplus to requirements and the two who top the list are the only two who arrived in the summer.

John Lundstram

You always get signings that look good on paper and just never quite work out and that has been the case with the Sheffield United man.

It was seen as a real coup when Rangers got him on a free transfer as he his value had been estimated at anything up to £10 million.

But he was substituted at half-time in his last outing at home to Dundee United and that pretty much summed up his time in Scotland.

The Scouser has shown promise in some games as Steven Gerrard and assistant Gary McAllister defended him and pointed to a change in role for him finding his feet.

But playing for Gerrard was one of the main attractions for his move to Rangers and he is likely to be on a significant wage more worthy of a first team regular, especially with James Sands now for competition.

Lundstram won’t be short of admirers after his form in helping Sheffield United win promotion and top end Championship sides could be tempted to make a move.

Juninho Bacuna

The former Huddersfield man was the second of the summer arrivals in a quiet transfer window for Rangers.

He arrived on a two-year deal in August after the Ibrox club had failed to get a deal done in the January.

The Terriers had paid £2 million for the Curacao international but he has only completed 90 minutes once, when he scored in the win over Ross County in Steven Gerrard’s final game.

Huddersfield chairman Phil Hodgkinson has revealed they structured a deal that he believes will see them recoup much of the cash they paid for him but it’s appearance-based so it’s hard to see at this stage.

Jack Simpson

It’s coming up for a year since the former Bournemouth man arrived at Ibrox but he just hasn’t cut it.

He’s 25 years old so can hardly be described as a youngster and with James Sands also able to play in his position then it’s another option ahead of him.

A number of Championship clubs have been linked with the defender and would make sense to move on.

Jermain Defoe

The veteran will be considering his next career move whether that’s on the field as a player, a coach or in the TV studio as a pundit.

But in any case it's hard to see him featuring much under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and he's another whose wages could be useful if he isn’t playing.

Defoe arrived three years ago and has been a big influence at the club but probably time to move on.

Brandon Barker

Hasn’t been seen in a Rangers shirt for a year now after a loan spell at Oxford United and definitely one Ross Wilson will be keen to move on.

Joined the club two-and-a-half years ago but the former Manchester City man hasn’t made the impact many expected.

Niko Katic

The writing looks to be on the wall with the Croatian understood to be unhappy at new signing James Sands being handed his No. 19 shirt.

Croatian is currently on loan back in his homeland at Hajduk Split and it’s hard to see a way back for him.

Has made a contribution since his signing in the summer of 2018 but last season’s injury was a huge setback and another to be moved on.

Cedric Itten

Some might say the Swiss striker hasn’t had enough of a chance as he has done well when called upon.

And the beanpole frontman might be one Giovanni van Bronckhorst would prefer to have a closer look at.

Itten hasn’t done badly during current loan spell at Greuther Furth in Germany so might have an outside chance of getting another opportunity to prove himself - or might there be a chance to cash in on Bundesliga interest?

Andy Firth

A popular figure around Ibrox due to his personality but not one who is going to challenge Allan McGregor, Jon McLaughlin or Robby McCrorie so a return to England likely.
