John Hughes 'under consideration' for Motherwell manager post as search continues for Stevie Hammell replacement

John Hughes is one of the names Motherwell are seriously considering to replace Stevie Hammell, according to a report.

The Fir Park side are on the lookout for their next permanent boss after Hammell was dismissed following their Scottish Cup exit against Raith. Youth coach Stuart Kettlewell has been charged with stopping the rot in the meantime as the board consider their options and the former Ross County boss will be hoping to use it as an audition to land the job himself.

Former 'Well midfielder Paul Lambert ruled himself out of taking the job but former Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin is an option while it's reported Dunfermline manager James McPake is another they are looking at closely. Hughes, who has been out of work since leaving the Pars after their relegation to League One, has consistently been up there in the betting and the BBC now report he is "under consideration" for the job.

Experienced boss Hughes was appointed as Ross County manager in December 2020 and earned plaudits for the job he did in keeping the Staggies in the Premiership. But he couldn't save Dunfermline from the same fate as they dropped into League One after a ninth-placed finish and defeat to Queen's Park in the playoffs.

Hughes was Falkirk manager throughout their long stay in the top flight and left for Hibs in 2009. He's since managed Livingston, Hartlepool, Raith and Inverness - where he famously won the Scottish Cup in 2015.
