John Elway reiterates Broncos may give Chris Harris a new contract after the draft

The third round of the 2019 NFL draft has passed and Chris Harris is still on the Denver Broncos’ roster. That may be a sign that he won’t be traded, at least not this weekend.

The Broncos have selected four players so far and none of them are cornerbacks. If the team lets Harris walk during free agency in 2020, they would likely receive a third-round compensatory pick in 2021. So Denver seemed unlikely to trade Harris for anything less than a third-round pick.

Now that the third round is over, the Broncos have little reason to trade the cornerback during the draft. They may not trade him at all.

“I did not hear [from] anybody about Chris today,” general manager John Elway said on Friday evening. “And, as I said the last three times, when the draft is over I’ll be glad to talk to Chris and see what we can do.”

After Harris told the team that he wanted a new contract or a trade, rumors spread that the four-time Pro Bowler could be dealt during the draft. Elway has maintained that contract extension talks would not happen until after the draft had concluded, though.

Perhaps the two sides will be able to work something out in the coming weeks. A trade no longer appears to be the only option.
