Tributes have been paid following the death of former Carlisle United owner John Courtenay at the age of 70.
Courtenay was managing director of Umbro Ireland and a popular figure in Irish football circles, who struck a deal with the FAI to make Umbro Ireland's official kit supplier.
Courtenay had a two-year stint as Carlisle owner between 2002 and 2004 and current club chairman Andrew Jenkins reflected: "I got on extremely well with John. He was a very likeable character who could hold a room with his stories.
"He was always described as larger than life and I think everyone will agree that was a very fair description.
"I'd like to say a thank you to him for everything he did for the club. He wanted the best for Carlisle United and it’s a shame that it didn’t work out for him.
"His enthusiasm was infectious and those who worked with or alongside him were desperate to see him get the success he so dearly wanted.
"I pass on the sympathies of those at the club to his family, friends and loved ones at this sad time."
The FAI and Shamrock Rovers shared their condolences following the news of his passing.
An FAI tribute read: "The FAI is very saddened to hear of the death of John Courtenay, the man who brought Umbro to the Ireland team and whose sponsorships links with the Association continue to this day through JACC. May he rest in peace."
Shamrock Rovers also expressed their condolences, tweeting: "All at Shamrock Rovers F.C. are deeply saddened at the news of the passing on John Courtenay.
"John was a great supporter of Irish football and of particular support for our club. We offer our condolences to the Courtenay family at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
