Comedian John Bishop has lead tributes to his beloved mum Kathleen who sadly passed away today.

The Liverpool native was set to perform in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin in the hit panto Mother Goose alongside Ian McKellan, but it was announced that Bishop won't perform on stage this week as he is on compassionate leave. Taking to Instagram today, 56-year-old Bishop announced the heartbreaking news of his mum's death.

He wrote: "Two weeks ago my Mum came to see me in Mother Goose in Liverpool and joined in the sing a long at the end as I knew she would. This morning we said goodbye to her and we will never hear her sing again.

"As a family we are heartbroken. She was a mother, a grandmother and a great grandmother and she loved us all. Next week she would have been married to my Dad for 62 years and they had a love and a friendship that was beautiful to be around," added Bishop.

He went on to thank all the "brilliant staff" at Whiston Hospital on ward 3C who "could not have done more and provided exceptional care for us all." Bishop said: "Anyone who has lost a parent will understand when I say it is a pain like no other.

"I will never have another mother but I will be eternally grateful for being lucky enough to have had the one I did. Good night Mum, your were our sunshine," he added.

Fans and celebrity friends flocked to the comments section on Instagram to offer their condolences. John's wife of 30 years Melanie also paid tribute to her mother-in-law, saying: "Your Mum was a very lovely ,kind and wonderful lady who always made me feel welcome and who had the most bright beautiful eyes and an overwhelming smile. I will miss her dearly."

Fellow comedian Jason Byrne commented: "That is beautiful John, so sad." Singer Example wrote: "Lovely words mate. Sending love."

Another person wrote: "Sad news John, may she RIP."
