John Bishop and partially deaf son to star in new TV documentary about hearing loss

John Bishop and his son Joe Bishop will share the realities of hearing loss in a "personal and insightful" new documentary which is due to air on ITV later this year.

Life After Deaf will see the comedian, 55, and his eldest son, 27 - who lost most of his hearing when he was 15 - go on a journey to understand more about the deaf community.

The one-hour documentary will see the father and son learn British Sign Language (BSL) together and open up about the 12 years since Joe became partially deaf himself.

They will meet people from the deaf community who relate to facing miscommunication and misunderstanding but also offer alternative perspectives on what it means to be deaf.

And the project - understood to have been filmed earlier this year - will see John set himself the ambition of learning to sign well enough to perform stand-up comedy in BSL.

As part of its exploration of the realities of hearing loss, the documentary will also ask if John and Joe learning BSL together will give them with a better way to relate to each other.

Joe & John Bishop: Life After Deaf - which is set to air later this year as part of the broadcaster's autumn schedule - is being made by South Shore & Lola TV for ITV and ITV Hub.

Discussing the documentary, John commented: "Before we started this journey, we could never have imagined what an impact it would have on us as a family."

He further said of the experience: "Joe and I are so grateful to the members of the Deaf community who we've met this year, their generosity has changed our lives."

Katie Rawcliffe, ITV's Head of Entertainment Commissioning, said it shows a "different side" to John and is an insight into what life is like for the deaf community and their loved ones.

They further commented: "We're very grateful to John and Joe for sharing their story with us and hope our audiences find this film engaging and informative as we have done."

South Shore CEO Andrew Mackenzie said. "This is an extraordinary and brave film for the Bishop family to make. They've opened up an incredibly personal and moving story as they take their first steps into the Deaf community.
