John Barnes' daughter recalls seeing news about her dad's affair while in school lesson

John Barnes' daughter Jemma has recalled the heartbreaking moment she found out her famous footballer dad cheated on her mum Suzy.

The former Liverpool winger, 58, appeared on Kate Garraway's Life Stories tonight as her first guest on the series, which was previously hosted by Piers Morgan.

In the sit-down interview, which detailed everything from his time at the football club and his high-flying career, to dealing with vile racism and also his past relationships, John opened up about the moment his family found out about the news in 2001 and how they dealt with it.

His daughter Jemma, 24, found it particularly difficult, and explained how she found out at his affair while at school in and arts and crafts class.

In a VT, she said: "I have such a vivid memory of being at school.

"You know when you do arts and crafts and paint work at school, and they get all the newspapers out to cover the tables.

"They had a picture of mum and dad on it. A headline of family separating. I saw the darker side of being famous."

She added: "I do have memories of people coming and knocking on the door with cameras trying to speak to my mum, and mum being like, 'Just don't go downstairs' or 'Shut the curtains,' things like that."

Jemma concluded: "It was quite a turbulent time, I would say."

Meanwhile, her brother Jamie said: "The divorce was difficult for mum."

Speaking to the footie legend after he watched his children discuss the cheating, Kate turned to him and said: "Tough for you that, John."

Agreeing with Kate, he said: "I was a terrible husband, but I always tried to be a good father.

"I kind of felt as long as I'm a good father, then everything else is OK. Me and Suzy were never going to get back together.

"Under different circumstances I could have moved away, or next seen as much of the kids.

"But that's why I decided to stay in the area, to just be there for them."

John added he got "carried away" and his ego "got the better of him" which led to his infidelity.

However the football star says the family are in a better place these days and have tried to put the past behind them.
