Jofra Archer provides fitness update ahead of England's third Test vs India

Fit-again Jofra Archer has recovered from his elbow niggle to put himself in pole-position for the pink ball Test on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old will return to the side as England look set to make another set of wholesale changes to try and get their noses in front of India once more.

And he insists he feels better for the rest and a cortisone injection in his troublesome elbow after starring in the first Test win.

“I'm feeling fine, no complaints,” said Archer. “I just tried to utilise the best of the two-week window.

“I could have played the second Test if needed, but I was going to be rested anyway, so I just tried to get the cortisone injection so I could have enough time to rebuild up to the third Test.

“Rest and rotation is necessary for now. It's always nice to be in competition for the spot.”

Archer can't wait to get his hands on the pink ball in match conditions after discovering just how well it holds together and the movement it can generate.

He is yet to play in a pink ball Test with this being England's fourth day/night Test and their first since they lost to New Zealand nearly three years ago.

But he has played a couple of first class games for Sussex against Gloucestershire and Glamorgan in 2017 and 2018 where he took 8-46 in the most recent match including 4-15 in the first innings.

“It feels like a normal pink ball,” he said. “I've used a pink ball a couple of times and it's pretty much the same.

“It scruffs a little bit, it's a little bit harder to shine but usually it stays a little bit harder and when the lights come on it does a little bit more than what it does during the day.

“I think in India, I just get the feeling the captain doesn't expect me to get a five-for or a six-for in the subcontinent, you get your two or your three and I think you've done your job.”

One suspects that Joe Root might be hoping for a little more under the lights this week.
