Joelinton's man of the match display, Saint-Maximin shines: Newcastle 3-3 Brentford player ratings

Newcastle's wait for a Premier League win goes on after a pulsating 3-3 draw with Brentford at St James' Park.

The Magpies got off to the perfect start when skipper Jamaal Lascelles headed his side into the lead from a corner won by Joelinton.

But the lead barely lasted a minute when former United striker Ivan Toney equalised after some poor defending.

Toney could have had two more, seeing one effort ruled off for offside before Fabian Schar cleared an effort from the Brentford man off the line.

But the Bees did take the lead just after the half-hour mark when Rico Henry was left all alone in the box to score.

This time it was Newcastle's turn to rally, however, and they were back on terms when Joelinton calmly slotted home after good work from Allan Saint-Maximin.

Brentford regained the lead midway through the second half when Onyeka's effort took a big deflection off Lascelles to beat Karl Darlow.

Still United weren't done, and Saint-Maximin made it 3-3 when he side-footed home sub Ryan Fraser's cross.

Here's how Lee Ryder rated the Newcastle United players

Karl Darlow 6

Recovered from a first half mishap with a couple of timely blocks but has Dubravka breathing down his neck.

Jacob Murphy 6

Did well going forward but may take time to get to grips with 3-4-3. Not too convincing defensively.

Jamaal Lascelles 7

A dramatic afternoon with a goal at each end. But much better. An ice cool challenge late in second half on Henry showed he can hit the heights again.

Fabian Schar 7

An important first half clearance from Toney. A decent effort on his return.

Ciaran Clark 6

Battled hard but didn't always look comfortable with new formation.

Matt Ritchie 7

Looked much sharper and weighed in with an assist. Swung in 10 crosses overall.

Jonjo Shelvey 7

Some elegant touches and stayed focus on defensive responsibilities with three interceptions.

Joe Willock 6

Battled hard and was closer to the levels we saw last season. Had 45 touches before

Allan Saint-Maximin 8

A thorn in the side of Brentford. Wonderful equaliser.

Joelinton 8

Man of the match. Won six aerial balls and weighed in with a goal. When Newcastle were under the cosh he was the last man battling for every ball.

Callum Wilson 7

Worked hard but nothing fell for him. One chance cleared off the line in first half.

Subs

Ryan Fraser 7 (for Willock 68)

Assisted the all important leveller.

Sean Longstaff 6 (for Schar 68)

Some important touches.
