Joe Root has admitted that England "missed opportunities" to win the fourth Test against India, after they slumped to a 157-run defeat on day five.
The defeat means India are now 2-1 up in the series with just one Test remaining and Root has reflected on how England should have made a bigger first-innings lead and done better in the field.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Root said: "It is frustrating not to be able to get something from the game today.
"We turn up this morning and we really feel like we had an opportunity to win the Test match, especially with that opening partnership which I thought was outstanding.
"Credit to India, they got the ball to reverse and they made good use of that. It was a brilliant spell of bowling from Bumrah and that really was the turning point in the game.
"I think we look at other areas in the Test match where we may have missed opportunities. We could have been a little bit better, could have made more of an advantage of that first innings lead.
"Obviously in the field it's difficult, with some of those chances where you have got to take them against world-class players."
Root went on to tell BBC Test Match Special: "I thought we set a platform to go on and win the game. It was a brilliant spell of bowling that bust it open for India.
"We’ve got to look at the whole game. Our catching has to improve.
"We’ll do some learning. The good thing is we don’t have to long to dwell on it.
"It’s been a fantastic series. You want to be on the right side of the results, but the quality has been high. I expect the same at Old Trafford.
"There is a lot going on. It’s good, hard Test cricket. We’ll be right up for it again when we get to Old Trafford."
