Joe Gomez would be making a ‘good move’ if he leaves Liverpool to join Aston Villa in the January transfer window, according to former Scotland boss Alex McLeish.
The 24-year-old defender has been linked with a move to Villa Park after falling down the pecking order at Anfield.
Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate have battled it out this season to partner Virgil van Dijk in the Reds’ central defence, leaving Gomez on the periphery of Jurgen Klopp’s plans.
The England star has only made 10 appearances across all competitions this season, and McLeish believes joining Steven Gerrard’s improving side could prove to be a shrewd move on Gomez’s part.

“Steven probably knows quite a bit about the guy. I’m sure he’ll have seen Gomez in action many, many times," McLeish told Football Insider .
“The question is, he’s going to cost a fair bit and I’m not sure they’ll do Steven any favours in terms of transfer fees.
“He’d probably still cost over £20million but these are at the levels we’re at these days.
“Gomez is probably at the moment in his career where he needs to play every single game or most of the games in a season. He’s got to think about his own future too.
“Villa are an emerging club, they’ve spent a hell of a lot of money over the past few seasons and will want to keep on improving."
Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton in a £3.5m deal in the summer of 2015 and has made 131 appearances for the club.
