Joe Gomez injury: Liverpool crisis worsens as defender breaks down in England training

Joe Gomez has added to Liverpool and England’s injury concerns after breaking down in training ahead of Thursday’s clash with the Republic of Ireland, with reports of a possible lengthy spell on the sidelines for the centre-back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has already had to pull out of the latest Three Lions squad after damaging his calf in Liverpool’s draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

At Gareth Southgate’s press conference later on Wednesday, the England manager explained more about the incident.

“I can't tell you how serious it is because he's yet to have scans,” he told reporters.

"What was upsetting was to see he was in a fair bit of pain and the fact was there was nobody around him when the injury happened, so I didn't like that element of it.

"But we've just got to wait and see what the scans show and we're all hopeful for him that it's not what it might be.

"But it's not a good situation. I don't see him being involved in the games with us, that's for sure."

He added: "My immediate thoughts are with him because he's had some difficulties with injury in the past, so we're hoping as much as we possibly can and praying that it's not going to be a long-term one but we just have to see."

Jurgen Klopp is also without Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season following a knee operation.

It is a major worry for the Premier League champions, in particular, given the mounting injuries at Anfield, with youngster Nathaniel Phillips recently being drafted in for his Premier League debut and the likes of teenager Rhys Williams waiting in the wings.
