Joe Flacco won’t play in Hall of Fame Game; Broncos will start Kevin Hogan

The Denver Broncos won’t play starting quarterback Joe Flacco in the Hall of Fame Game against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday, coach Vic Fangio said after practice Monday.

Kevin Hogan will start for Denver. Hogan, 26, played with the Cleveland Browns from 2016-2017 and spent part of last season as a Broncos reserve.

Hogan got the nod over second-round draft choice Drew Lock, who is listed as the No. 3 QB on the Broncos’ first depth chart of 2019. Though he won’t be starting against Atlanta, Lock will get plenty of reps in Denver’s first preseason game, and undrafted rookie Brett Rypien will play, too.

Lock will compete with Hogan for the backup job this summer.

Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller is expected to join Flacco on Denver’s unofficial inactive list. Many of the Broncos’ and Falcons’ star players will not participate, giving young players on both teams a chance to impress their coaches and earn a spot on the 53-man roster.
