Joe Dahl was injured on Thursday, won’t practice Friday, and his game status is in doubt

Mid-week injuries, especially soft tissue injuries, are typically bad news for a player’s game availability, and the Detroit Lions could be looking for a new starting left guard for their Week 2 matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

After injuring his groin during Thursday’s practice, Lions starting left guard Joe Dahl will miss Friday’s practice — per coach Matt Patricia at his morning press conference — and his status for Sunday’s game is in doubt.

With starting right tackle Hal Vaitai’s game status also in doubt, Tyrell Crosby may be headed towards another start at right tackle. That would leave veteran Oday Aboushi, rookie Logan Stenberg, or tackle/guard Matt Nelson as the primary players that could replace Dahl.

The Lions could also promote Kenny Wiggins or Beau Benzschawel from the practice squad, but that would likely be for depth purposes, as opposed to either of them challenging to start.

Stenberg is Dahl’s backup on the Lions official depth chart, but the odds are more likely that Aboushi is the next man up. Aboushi started two games for the Lions, both at left guard replacing Dahl late in 2019.
