Joe Biden 'clear path to victory' but Donald Trump threatens to sue

Joe Biden is on the brink of presidency, with just one key state needed to get him the required electoral votes.

After securing victories in Wisconsin and Michigan, the Democrat has 264 electoral college votes and needs to secure 270 to win.

The states remaining include Georgia (16 votes), Nevada (6 votes), North Carolina (15 votes), Alaska (3 votes) or Pennsylvania (20 votes).

That means if Biden bags one of those four key states with the most votes he will claim the country's top position.

Trump, however, must win all four states, and has already reportedly begun legal action in three of them to either stop the counting of votes or insist his team be provided greater access to scrutinise the process.

Yesterday, in the early stages of counting, Trump falsely claimed he had won and threatened to go to the Supreme Court.

Speaking in the White House, he said: "This is a fraud on the American public, this is an embarrassment to our country.

"We were getting ready to win this election - frankly we did win this election.

"So our goal now is to ensure the integrity for the good of this nation. This is a very big moment.

"This is a major fraud on our nation.

"We want the law to be used in a proper manner. So we will be going to the US Supreme Court, we want all voting to stop.

"We don't want them to find any ballots at 4am and add them to the list."

In return, Biden's campaign said the president's comments were a "naked attempt to take away the democratic rights of American citizens".

Trump's campaign requested a recount in Wisconsin, in addition to filing lawsuits in Pennsylvania and Michigan seeking to pause the vote count in those key battleground states.

His campaign also filed suit in Georgia, asking for a judge to order election officials there to follow the law on storing and counting absentee ballots.

Mr Trump has nominated three of the Supreme Court's nine justices - including, controversially, Amy Coney Barrett, whose appointment was confirmed just a week before the election.

It is unclear what, if any, legal basis the president would have, with Mr Biden's camp insisting that the law required every "duly cast vote" to be counted.
