NSW Opposition leader Jodi McKay has thrown her support behind the Newcastle Herald's Your Right To Know campaign.
"The GIPA Act is simply useless, the government is able to refuse freedom of information requests for a variety of reasons and they start from 'You are not going to have that document released', rather than 'It should be released, why wouldn't it be released', so it's the attitude of the government and that's why we're in this situation where there's so many leaks from government departments," she said.
"The GIPA Act should be changed, it was always about making sure people had the right to access public information and it's being used as a tool to hide the budget blowout and the maladministration and incompetence of this government and it should not be used that way.
"I'm completely with you on this, I feel very strongly about this, people should be able to access information."
She called on the government to "be honest on the budget, the timeline and whether they're actually going to pursue" the Newcastle Education Precinct.
