Joao Cancelo included in Man City squad for Arsenal game

Joao Cancelo has travelled with the Manchester City squad to play Arsenal on New Year's Day.

The Portugal right-back was attacked in his home on Thursday by four burglars who assaulted him and made off with his jewellery as he tried to protect himself and his family.

City sent staff round to check on the player and issued a statement condemning the 'shocking and appalling' incident.

A decision over whether to include Cancelo in the squad for the game on Saturday lunchtime was left to the player. He felt able make himself available for the match and City staff were happy enough with the checks they made to allow that.

Cancelo is also helping the police with their enquiries as they investigate the attack at his home.

Pep Guardiola also welcomed Kyle Walker back to training on Thursday as his team prepared for the game at the Emirates.

Walker has been absent from the last four matches with an illness but is nearing full fitness again. John Stones and Rodri also missed the game at Brentford.

City are hoping to win their 11th consecutive league game and stretch their lead at the top of the table to 11 points, piling the pressure on their two nearest rivals — Liverpool and Chelsea — who face each other at Stamford Bridge the next day.
