Joanna Cherry targeted with 'vicious threat to safety' after being dropped by SNP

Joanna Cherry has revealed she has been targeted with a 'vicious threat to her safety' on the day she was sacked from the SNP front bench.

The MP for Edinburgh South West tweeted to say she received the threat at some point this evening, Monday February 1, and was now 'somewhere safe.'

The matter is believed to have been reported to Police Scotland.

Cherry said: "Action & inaction have consequences.

"Tonight I’ve received a vicious threat from a man to my personal safety. The matter has been reported to Police Scotland & I’m somewhere safe.

"Thank you for all the lovely messages of support

It comes on the day the SNP veteran was dropped from the Westminster frontbench, having served as Shadow Secretary of State for the Home Department and Justice.

A prominent feminist, Cherry has been caught up in the massive internal row in the SNP over gender recognition and trans rights.

However, she is also seen as potential leadership challenger to Nicola Sturgeon and was voted onto the party's ruling NEC this year well ahead of fellow candidates.

Social media users were quick to come to the politician's support over the alleged threats, with comedian Janie Godley leading the messages.

She wrote: "That’s horrific, I hope they jail him for his s****y frightening threatening behaviour - stay safe sending love."

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
