Comedy legend Jim Carrey has made a headline-grabbing move, selling his long-time Brentwood mansion in Los Angeles for a jaw-dropping $17 million after slashing millions off the asking price. The dramatic sale has fuelled speculation about whether the beloved actor is finally preparing to step away from the bright lights of Hollywood.
The timing, coupled with the significant price drop, has fans wondering if Carrey is quietly turning the page on his three-decade LA chapter.
A 41% Price Drop for a Hollywood Icon's Home
When Carrey first listed the estate in February 2023, the price tag was an eye-watering $28.9 million (£21.3 million), according to Complex. But despite his celebrity status and the property's lavish amenities, the listing lingered for more than two years without a buyer.
Experts say a mix of fluctuating demand in LA's luxury real estate market and growing wildfire concerns in the area may have dampened interest. By August 2025, Carrey accepted a final offer of $17 million (£12.53 million) – a huge 41% reduction.
Even with the discount, the sale represents a win for Carrey, who bought the property in 1994 for $3.8 million (£2.8 million). The deal was handled by Graham J. Larson of Sotheby's International Realty, with the buyer choosing to remain anonymous.
Inside Jim Carrey's Luxury Retreat
Set across 11,000 square feet and sitting on more than two acres in Brentwood's exclusive neighbourhood, the mansion blends mid-century ranch charm with Hollywood glamour. The five-bedroom, nine-bathroom home features soaring ceilings, brick hallways, hardwood floors and six fireplaces.
Highlights include a custom Art Deco movie theatre inspired by classic Hollywood, a wine cellar, a home gym, and a wet bar. Carrey's own vibrant artwork is displayed throughout, with a dedicated gallery space. One bathroom even has stained wood panelling and a working fireplace, giving it a touch of old-world elegance.
Outdoors, the estate feels like a private resort with a floodlit tennis court, a pool and spa with a cascading waterfall, and a pool house equipped with a wet bar, steam room and infrared sauna. Tucked away in the treetops is a yoga and meditation platform, offering serene views and privacy.
Retirement Rumours Heat Up
Carrey has teased retirement for years. In an April 2022 interview with Access Hollywood, he said he was 'fairly serious' about stepping back after Sonic the Hedgehog 2, though he stopped short of making it official. Calling the idea 'power resting,' he left the door open for a return if the right script came along.
'I might continue down the road if the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink,' Carrey quipped at the time.
At the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 premiere in December 2024, he joked that financial necessity could pull him back to acting but stressed that painting and spirituality now take priority.
A New Chapter Beyond Hollywood?
Friends and industry insiders believe the sale of his Brentwood home signals a deeper shift. After more than 30 years in the same house, Carrey appears ready to step away from the pressures of Hollywood and focus on his passions.
The timing of the sale, paired with such a steep discount, has sparked talk that he may leave Los Angeles altogether. Whether or not he officially retires, it is clear that Carrey is charting a course towards a life defined less by film sets and more by personal fulfilment.
For the new owner, the deal represents the chance to own one of Brentwood's most unique luxury retreats. For Carrey, it may be the start of a more private and creatively liberated era – one where his art and his well-being take centre stage.
