Jim Beam warehouse fire: Huge blaze destroys 45,000 barrels of bourbon in Kentucky

A Jim Beam warehouse filled with 45,000 barrels of bourbon caught fire on Tuesday night after severe thunderstorms rampaged through Kentucky.

Forty firefighters from five counties were sent to help battle the fire which covered an area the size of a football field and was six to seven-storeys high.

The warehouse, which is owned by Beam Suntory, the parent company of Jim Beam, collapsed after the fire spread to a second warehouse.

No injuries have been reported and the barrels were said to be 'relatively young whiskey', according to a statement from Beam Suntory.

The massive fire lasted through the night and was finally put out at around 2pm local time on Wednesday.

Local photojournalist Ryan Hermens said in a tweet: "The smell of bourbon fills the air near the fire at a Jim Beam bourbon warehouse in Woodford County."

Emily York, spokeswoman for Beam Suntory, told CNN in a statement: "We are thankful that no one was injured in this incident, and we are grateful to the courageous firefighters from multiple jurisdictions who brought the fire uder control and prevented it from spreading.

"Given the age of of the lost whiskey, this fire will not impact the availability of Jim Beam for consumers."

Woodford County Emergency Management chief Drew Chandler said the warehouse was possibly struck by lightning and the fire had been way too big and hot to get a fire investigator near it.

He told the news outlet the fire was purposefully being allowed to continue for several more hours so that it burned the less distilled spirits that are in the debris.

Chandler added that there is a risk that the fire could reignite and they will continue monitoring the situation after it was put out.

The Beam Suntory company operates 126 barrel warehouses in Kentucky and holds about 3.3million barrels of whiskey.
