Jets legend Mark Gastineau finishes treatment for colon cancer

Mark Gastineau has sacked another foe.

The legendary Jets defensive end announced incredibly positive news on his Facebook page Thursday, posting that he finished all of his chemotherapy and radiation treatment for colon cancer after six weeks of treatment.

Gastineau, a member of the Jets Ring of Honor, revealed in March he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer and needed to undergo eight rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Since undergoing treatment, Gastineau has posted pictures and updates on Facebook so friends, family, and fans could see his progression. He even played tennis the day before his final treatment. Now, Gastineau struck an important blow to beating his newest opponent.

“If you don’t get screened, you’re never going to know and it could be too late,” Gastineau said following his diagnoses. “We want to raise awareness.”

Gastineau was a menacing force on the Jets defensive line in the 1980s. He, along with Joe Klecko, Marty Lyons and Abdul Salaam became known as “the New York Sack Exchange” and recorded a combined 66 sacks in 1981. Gastineau himself finished with 20 sacks that season, though it was a year before sacks were officially recorded as an NFL stat.

Colon cancer isn’t the only battle Gastineau is fighting. Two years ago, he opened up about his battle with dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. This is a huge victory for the Gastineau family and Jets Nation.
