Jet skiers warned over chasing ferry in dangerous game off Scots coast

Jet skiers have been warned to stop playing dangerous games with ships after three were seen chasing a ferry and a fishing vessel.

Residents in Oban watched the incidents in shock on Sunday.

Photographer Les Hazelgrave, who captured the jet skiers on camera, said: “They were zipping round the Mull ferry then used the warning buoys at the entrance to the bay as a slalom course.

"I couldn’t believe it when they did the same when the fish carrier vessel Norholm came out.

“They were using the waves caused by the ship’s wake to do tricks.

"But they were so close, if they’d mistimed it, there could have been a tragedy – somebody could have been killed.”

Iain MacKinnon, of Oban Coastguard, added: “You really need to be careful because if you are playing in the wake of a ship, the water is churned up by the propellers and is unpredictable, and a small craft, like a jet ski is quite vulnerable.”
