Dec. 16--DeMarco Murray holds much of Dallas' postseason hopes in his hands.
Unfortunately for the Cowboys and their fans, one of those hands is broken. Murray, the NFL's leading rusher, had surgery Monday evening to repair the fourth metacarpal bone in his left hand, which he broke the previous night during a 38-27 win over Philadelphia.
Nonetheless, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones gave a somewhat optimistic assessment when discussing Murray's status for the team's crucial matchup with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
"It's conceivable to me, it's not unrealistic that it could work with him being ready," Jones said Tuesday morning on 105.3 The Fan.
Although the injury won't be completely healed for several weeks, Jones noted that Murray carries the ball in his right hand (the non-injured one) and that the injury is "in a place where it really can be protected.
Still, he said, "we just want to take a look at it," adding that the ultimate decision probably won't be made until game time.
"I don't think we'd have to see him practice. I think it's more a question of the condition of the hand at game time and what we can do to protect it. I think it's one of those that you'd like to wait and see how he's feeling just right before the game."
Dallas has a one-game lead over Philadelphia on top of the NFC East with two games remaining.
