It’s been an absolutely batshit year, but a silver lining has arrived in the form of news that Miss Piggy of The Muppets fame is getting a movie spinoff, with Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence on board as producers.
That’s right, the ultimate diva is deservedly getting her time in the spotlight, with Big Mouth star and comedian Cole Escola set to pen a script for a standalone film about the on-again, off-again girlfriend of Kermit the Frog.
As if all those starry attached names weren’t enough, Lawrence announced the news while appearing on Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers’ Las Culturistas podcast, indicating that this Miss Piggy movie might be the gayest thing to hit screens since Timothée Chalamet had his way with that peach.
“I don’t know if I can announce this but I am just going to … Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it,” Lawrence, who is currently promoting her new movie Die, My Love, said in the episode released on Wednesday.
Details about the movie remain scarce, but Variety reports that it is in early development over at Disney, which owns the rights to the only MCU that matters, the Muppets Cinematic Universe.
It will mark the first time Miss Piggy has been the solo subject of a film, though she has of course appeared alongside her puppet ensemble in a whole host of Muppets movies, the most recent of which, Muppets Most Wanted, arrived in 2014.
Proving just as excited as the rest of us, Yang and Rogers shrieked in excitement at Lawrence’s announcement before asking whether she and Stone would appear in the Miss Piggy movie.
“I think so. We have to,” Lawrence teased, adding that “it’s fucked up” she and longtime friend Stone haven’t done a movie together.
Lawrence and Stone potentially making their debut joint appearance in a Miss Piggy spinoff written by Escola is a string of words that has restored my faith in humanity.
While some of us may have grown tired of Hollywood’s regurgitation of famous IP — from the recently announced Rugrats movie to the eleven hundredth offering from the *other* MCU — this is one spinoff that I’ll be well and truly sat for.
Heck, I might even be sat on a hand for the true puppet experience. Wait no, not in that way.
