Friday, Tony and Grammy-winning singer Jennifer Holliday defended her scheduled performance at President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.
Now she's had a change of heart.
Holliday wrote an open letter obtained by the entertainment website The Wrap, in which the "Dreamgirls" star called her decision to take part in Trump's inauguration a "lapse of judgment" and said he was "uneducated on the issues that affect every American at this crucial time in history and for causing such dismay and heartbreak to my fans."
Holliday had defended her decision to perform in the event on Friday, telling the New York Times, "I'm singing on the mall for the people."
After her interview with the Times, the Broadway star writes that she changed her mind after reading a Daily Beast article that said, among other things, that Holliday's decision was "an act that seems to defy everything her most passionate supporters stand for, and even issues she herself has supported throughout her career."
Subsequently, Holliday's spokesman, William Carpenter, emailed the Times to say, "I just spoke to her and she still hadn't made up her mind about doing the event."
Holliday said she must stand with the LGBT community that helped her achieve stardom.
"The LGBT community was mostly responsible for birthing my career and I am deeply indebted to you," Holliday wrote. "You have loved me faithfully and unconditionally and for so many years you provided me with work even though my star had long since faded."
Trump's inauguration team didn't respond to a request for comment. Still scheduled to perform at the Lincoln Memorial event Thursday are entertainers Toby Keith, 3 Doors Down and Lee Greenwood.
Jackie Evancho, a classical crossover soprano from Pittsburgh who placed second on "America's Got Talent" in 2010, will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" to close the event.
