April 17--A Southwest Side woman is being held without bail on charges including attempted murder after prosecutors say she tried to kill a romantic interest for going to another woman's house.
Kawanda Fortner, 37, has known the victim, a 32-year-old man, for about five years, and was in a romantic relationship with him, prosecutors said at a court hearing Thursday.
Fortner, of the 2900 block of West 60th Street in the Chicago Lawn community, was at a bar Wednesday when she saw the man's car, and got in her own car to follow him, prosecutors said. She followed the man to another woman's house in the 7900 block of South Constance Avenue, according to court records.
When Fortner got there and saw the man's car parked outside the home, she got out of her car and banged on the door and window of the house, prosecutors said.
The man stood behind the closed front door and told Fortner to leave. Fortner then fired two shots into the house, prosecutors said. One hit the man in the chest, and one hit a wall inside the home.
Fortner then left the porch and started shooting at the man's car, hitting two tires, prosecutors said. She then drove to her home and called 911, informing police of the incident, according to prosecutors.
The man remained hospitalized at the time of Thursday's court hearing, and the bullet is still lodged in his body. According to court records, he suffered a collapsed left lung, prosecutors said.
Fortner was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery. Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered Fortner, who was in court Thursday, jailed without bail.
