Two of Japan's entries in the mountain biking competition at the postponed Tokyo Olympics have been decided, with Kohei Yamamoto filling a berth for the men and Miho Imai securing a spot in the women's race.
The selection of the pair became assured when the Japan Cycling Federation announced Tuesday that it would stick with the original selection criteria for the Tokyo Games, which was postponed for one year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Yamamoto and Imai earned their tickets by being the highest-ranked Japanese in their gender in the International Cycling Union's rankings to be released at the end of May.
Although all competition has been suspended since mid-March, the Japan federation decided to stick with the selection process as it deemed its decision would be fair because most of the races in the qualifying period had been completed.
