Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi is likely to meet South Korean counterpart Chung Eui-yong during his visit to the United States from Wednesday to Friday, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.
According to sources, a schedule of the meeting is still under discussion, but the two foreign ministers are expected to discuss how to respond to North Korea's recent missile launches, during the time they are in New York for the U.N. General Assembly.
This would be the first meeting between the two ministers since they met in Britain in May on the sidelines of a G7 foreign ministers' meeting.
With North Korea having launched cruise and ballistic missiles in succession this month, the two are expected to confirm that their countries will cooperate in dealing with the situation under the Tokyo-Seoul framework and the trilateral framework with the United States.
During the meeting, Motegi is also expected to call on Chung to take appropriate measures to deal with the so-called comfort women issue and lawsuits filed by former requisitioned workers from the Korean Peninsula, which have worsened the bilateral relationship. However, Chung is expected to only explain South Korea's position.
