Jamie Redknapp says following his father's career path was 'a step too far'

Jamie Redknapp said he didn't want to follow in his father's footsteps in becoming a manager.

The sports pundit and his father, Harry Redknapp, joined The Jonathan Ross show to discuss their new programme, Jamie & Harry's World Cup Challenge: Got, Got Need. The series follows the pair as they attempt to build their World Cup dream team, meeting as many players as possible in only 11 days.

Thierry Henry was just one footballer the pair had their sights set on but Harry admitted he slipped through their fingers. The former Portsmouth manager went on to say how much he enjoyed doing the show with Jamie and how incredibly proud he is of him.

The gushing statement prompted Jonathan to ask whether or not they ever had "competition" with each other which they both shot down.

Jamie said: "No. I can honestly say there is no competition. We were so lucky growing up. We were in the same industry. All I wanted to do was please my dad. I wanted to be a footballer and luckily I achieved that."

The former Liverpool player admitted there was one venture his father took that never appealed to him, stating he refused to go down the same route.

Jamie added: "The only thing I never wanted to do was follow him into management - I thought that was a step too far. We just get on so well!"

The Jonathan Ross Show airs Saturday at 10:10 PM on ITV and ITV HUB.
