Jamie Carragher's Liverpool pre-season concern coming to the fore after Brighton defeat

Liverpool’s defeat against Brighton on Wednesday night highlighted a key issue Jamie Carragher warned the Reds of before the season began.

The Premier League champions were flat against Brighton at Anfield as they fell to a disappointing loss to Graham Potter’s side.

Liverpool had gone nearly four years without a league defeat at home, but have now lost twice on the bounce after a defeat to Burnley in January.

The champions are holding onto their Premier League crown by a thread, and are now seven points behind Manchester City – who have a game in hand.

And it seems Carragher’s prediction from before the season is coming true, after warning last summer that they could suffer from a lack of change.

Liverpool brought in Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara and Kostas Tsimikas last summer, but haven’t made any changes to the way they play.

And speaking before the season began, Carragher warned Jurgen Klopp that he’ll need to make changes in order to retain the title.

"If Liverpool don't win the league this season, I don't think it will be because they will have lacked motivation," he said.

"This Liverpool team went to a Champions League final, came back the next year and won it, then went on to win the Premier League.

"The only worry for Liverpool is that the team hasn't changed too much.

"Sometimes you just need a bit of freshness adding to it, mentally as much as anything.

“It will be interesting to see if they get a signing or two across the line."

Liverpool face Manchester City on Sunday in arguably their biggest game of the season.

Pep Guardiola’s side could go ten points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand, and Klopp will know he badly needs a win.
