Jamie Carragher issues Shkodran Mustafi transfer advice to Arsenal after Liverpool thriller

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has told Arsenal they need to oust Shkodran Mustafi from their squad quickly in the January transfer market.

The Germany international has fallen further down the pecking order following the signing of David Luiz in the summer and will drop further next summer when William Saliba joins from St. Etienne.

Mustafi's return to the starting line-up against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday did not go to plan, as the former Valencia man opened the scoring for the Reds by putting the ball into his own net.

The Gunners fought back and led numerous times in the match but eventually drew the game 5-5 before being denied a spot in the quarter-finals of the competition after losing on penalties.

After the match, Carragher gave his assessment on numerous aspects of the Arsenal squad and issued a frank verdict on Mustafi's role within the squad.

According to the former England man, there is no way back for Mustafi and Arsenal would benefit by ousting him from their ranks as quickly as possible.

"Those days are gone, Mustafi playing in the Premier League. I don't think how he played tonight has changed that. He's just one of those defenders who makes mistakes and it affects other people," he told Sky Sports

"When you play with someone who makes you nervous, you can't play your own game. You're always worried he's going to make a mistake. I think the quicker he's gone, the better for everyone."
