Jamie Carragher explains potential impact of Dean Henderson remaining Manchester United number one

Jamie Carragher believes if Dean Henderson keeps his place in the Manchester United team, then he could become an England regular.

Henderson has played the last three games for United - and kept two clean sheets - with David de Gea on paternity leave following the birth of his first child.

The England shot-stopper has one cap for the Three Lions but has struggled to really put in a fight for the number one spot with De Gea being first-choice under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, if Henderson can continue his strong performances for United, then he could keep his Spanish teammate out of the team and stake a claim for an England spot, according to Carragher.

The former Liverpool vice-captain, speaking on Sky Sports, said that Henderson would be difficult to ignore if he became first-choice between the posts at Old Trafford.

“I think if Dean Henderson becomes the Manchester United number one goalkeeper, I always think it’s very difficult for an England manager to not pick a player at a top club, never mind a goalkeeper," Carragher said.

"What I said about Nick Pope: I think he’ll find it very difficult to ever become a regular for England because he plays for Burnley, and I don’t mean any disrespect to Sean Dyche or the club, but certainly in the way they play and the way Gareth Southgate wants to play, it’s completely different.

"If you’re playing for Manchester United week-in and week-out - it still remains to be seen whether he stays in the team - playing Champions League when the pressure is as high as possible, I think it gives him a great opportunity, maybe after this tournament, I think Pickford will keep his place for that, but going forward into next season, I think if Henderson is the United goalkeeper, it’s very difficult not to pick him for England.”
