Jamie Carragher explains how Thierry Henry "torture" was made worse by a taxi driver

Jamie Carragher has explained how his "torture" when up against Thierry Henry was even ridiculed by a London taxi driver.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher has frequently said that Arsenal legend Henry was the best player he ever came up against during matches for the Reds.

Henry often got the better of Carragher during a spell when Arsenal were the one of the best sides in English football, with the Frenchman's goals helping the Gunners win the Premier League in 2002 and 2004.

And there was a spell when Carragher couldn't get away from reminders of Henry's quality, especially during a shopping trip to the capital at the height of the rivalry.

"I don’t think I’ve ever told this story but I was in London, went to London with my wife, little bit of shopping, and a taxi driver beeped the horn at me," said Carragher on his new podcast The Greatest Game , which featured Henry as his guest for the first episode.

"So I turned round and he put up a piece of paper and it just said ‘Thierry Henry’. And he was just pointing it at me.'

"And I was like "f***ing hell I can’t get away from this fella!" Even when I’m not on the pitch I can’t get anywhere! That’s how bad you tortured me for a couple of years anyway.'

"You’re the only player I ever played against who I was worried about playing against before the match. You got into my head."

Henry, for his part, played down his supposed advantage over Carragher.

"That's why I always say to you that the job of a striker is too easy," he said.

"I always say (to people) Carra stopped me way more than I passed him. Way more.

"But I only need one, and that's why I think sometimes it is unfair."
