Jamie Carragher brutally mocks Peter Schmeichel with reminder of outlandish Man Utd claim

Peter Schmeichel was brutally mocked by Jamie Carragher after being reminded of his claim that former club Manchester United could win the Champions League.

While United head into their Round of 16 second leg at home to Atletico Madrid next Tuesday with the scores at 1-1, many believe that Ralf Rangnick and co. stand little chance of success on the continental front.

But speaking on CBS Sports last month, Schmeichel made it clear that he thought the Red Devils were in the running, leaving fellow pundits Carragher, Micah Richards and Thierry Henry in stitches.

"Yes. What kind of question is that?" the Dane responded when asked by Richards about Man United's chances.

But after Rangnick's side were smashed 4-1 in the Manchester Derby by bitter rivals City on Sunday, Schmeichel was playfully asked to revisit his comments.

"Welcome back to the studio. It's been a very very mixed bag," the 58-year-old admitted. "As I watched my son [Kasper Schmeichel] play against Leeds on Saturday and they won 1-0 - two consecutive clean sheets and six points, that was brilliant.

"Then on Sunday seeing Manchester United... I wouldn't say 'play' Man City but 'be outplayed' by Man City. Basically, we've been exposed to the level that we're at."

Liverpool legend Carragher interrupted by sarcastically asking: "So you still think they can win the Champions League?"

Schmeichel could not help but laugh before responding: "That was in the Premier League. Let's take it one game at a time."

While United's aim is to advance past Atletico and into the quarter-finals, Rangnick is also tasked with making sure that the Red Devils qualify for next season's Champions League by finishing in the Premier League top four.

Without a win from their last three games in all competitions, the acclaimed German coach knows that the next few are crucial, starting with the visit of Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford on Saturday.

"If we still want to have a chance to finish fourth at the end of the season, we can almost not drop anymore points, and we also know that in those 10 games that we have to play, there are a few other difficult ones so let's take it game by game," Rangnick said.

"For us, it's important we keep developing the team, which we did in the last couple of months, and then make sure we can win the next two home games against Tottenham and against Atletico, two very important games for us to come."

Meanwhile, Captain Harry Maguire told MUTV: "We know it's an important end to the season that we've got.

"It's a run of games where we know that we've got to go on a run, we've got to go and pick up win after win after win and we're more than capable of doing it but we've got to show it on the pitch, we've got to show it every game that we go into, take each game as it comes, a big game against Tottenham next."
