Jamie Carragher agrees with Glenn Hoddle about Mourinho's summer transfer mission at Tottenham

It is now just one clean sheet in nine matches for Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Despite having little to do over the course of the 90 minutes in Spurs' 4-1 win over Austrian side Wolfsberger in the first-leg of their UEFA Europa League round of 32 clash last night, the Frenchman was unable to secure just his third shut-out of 2021.

With Spurs already 3-0 up and coasting their way to the win, thanks to first half goals from Son Heung-min, Gareth Bale and Lucas Moura, Moussa Sissoko was guilty of giving away a sloppy penalty just ten minutes into the second half.

Striker Michael Liendl stepped up to the task of trying to pull a goal back for the underdogs and he cooly tucked the ball home, sending Lloris the wrong way in the process.

In the first half, though, Lloris produced a stunning stop to tip Dario Vizinger's header onto the crossbar.

The Frenchman made that save not too long after former Tottenham man and now-BT Sport pundit Glenn Hoddle raised questions about the shot-stopper's recent performances. Lloris has been guilty of committing one or two errors of late, particularly against both Liverpool and Everton.

His recent showings forced Hoddle into questioning why Spurs may need to dive into the transfer market this summer to find someone capable of challenging the former Lyon man for the No.1 spot, or to find someone to replace him in that role permanently.

Speaking pre-match, Hoddle told BT Sport: "He is having a poor time at the moment, you have got to say. The two goals we have analysed there [vs Manchester City], he was at fault.

"Here [vs Liverpool] he is at fault. That has got to go out for a corner. He is on the back-foot all the time. Here he just gets outdone for power [vs Everton]. He will be so disappointed that he has fallen backwards and it has gone straight through his hands.

"Now, that shows that the confidence levels are really low in the back-four. But, also, if your goalkeeper is playing how he is at the moment... his intent is to not come and get balls, he is actually wanting to get further to his line and I think he is struggling at this moment in time.

"They have got nobody else to go in there and say 'right, I am going to put you under pressure for your place.' I don't think he [Mourinho] trusts Joe Hart to play in the big games.

"I would be looking at it [signing a new goalkeeper], without any shadow of a doubt, unless Lloris gets back to the form that he can. At this moment in time there is a little bit of a pattern developing."

Hoddle is not the first pundit to have questioned Lloris' recent performances. Last weekend, following the defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher hit out at the Frenchman's showing.

“Hugo Lloris, who was awful in midweek, hasn’t been much better [against City]," Carragher told Sky Sports.

“He should have saved the penalty. And he should have saved that as well. On his (Gundogan’s) weak foot. He toe-pokes it really. He’s just not strong enough to keep it out. Very reminiscent of his performance in midweek.”

Then, on Monday Night Football, Carragher hit out at Lloris once again, as well as Spurs' defenders.

He added: "Tottenham's defenders are nowhere near good enough and neither is the goalkeeper to hold onto leads."

Therefore, with both Hoddle and Carragher raising doubts about Lloris, it does pose the question that maybe Spurs do need to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

Lloris, who is now 34, has been linked with a reunion with former Spurs chief Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain recently, potentially opening the door for Spurs to draft in a new 'keeper this summer.
