James McCarthy bamboozles Celtic fans as he goes full Brendan Rodgers with surprise accent

New recruit James McCarthy is finally getting the chance to pull on a Celtic jersey after years of links with the club.

While the midfielder's arrival may have surprised a few, many supporters were even more taken aback after his debut press conference.

The 30-year-old left Hamilton Accies as a teenager for a move south of the border, first penning a deal with Wigan in the English Premier League.

The Ireland cap would then go on to spend the next decade enjoying spells at The Latics, Everton and Crystal Palace before returning to Scotland.

Despite becoming a highly-regarded midfielder during his time in the English top flight, that's not all that has changed during his time there.

The Lanarkshire accent looks to be a thing of the past as he adopted a Brendan Rodgers style twang as he spoke to the gathered press and made reference to his youth days at Lennoxtown.

It left Celtic fans scratching their heads as, with one claiming he had gone "full Rodgers" early in his Parkhead career.

Another added: "He has to be on the bam up with that accent."

Another cheeky fan joked: "This has to be made up."

The midfielder is hoping to make his debut against Dundee United on Sunday if given the nod by Ange Postecoglou.

He stated: "It's down to the manager obviously and I've training been training back at Lennoxtown with a couple of the lads that were there.

"It's down to the manager now, obviously we'll meet all the rest of the team tomorrow they've been away in the Czech Republic so I'm looking forward to seeing them and getting to know a lot them as well."
