James McAuley: Tributes paid to popular Co Tyrone man

Tributes have been paid to a popular Co Tyrone man who passed away on Monday.

James McAuley, 29, from the Rock, just outside Cookstown, played for local GAA club Rock St Patrick's, who described him as "one of the most likeable lads you could ever hope to meet".

James and his twin brother Brian previously attended St Patrick's Academy in Dungannon. He is also survived by parents John and Jackie, and sisters Rachel, Ruth and Hannah.

In a statement Rock St Patrick's said: "Páirc Naomh Pádraig and the entire Rock community is a lonelier place this week with the loss of not only one of our senior players, but of a young man who was cherished and loved not only by his family, but also by the entire family of An Charraig Naomh Pádraig CLG..

"He always had a smile on his face, was up for a bit of craic and banter and was one of the most likeable lads you could ever hope to meet. Our club and community is now the poorer for his sad passing.

"The shock and sadness felt among his teammates has been all too evident since the sad news broke, and so heartbreaking to think that James will never stand between the posts in Páirc Naomh Pádraig or other pitches throughout TÍr Eoghain and beyond again.

"His memory will live long in our club and James will forever be remembered for the inspiring and likeable character that he was."

Cookstown SDLP councillor Kerri Hughes offered condolences to the family, having met James and his friends regularly while working in a bar in the town.

Cllrt Hughes said: "I am very sorry to hear about James' passing, he was a really great person who was always up for a laugh.

"Him, his brother Brian and his group of friends, it was always great to see them coming in and I am thinking and praying for him and all of his family and friends at this awful time."

James' employers CBD Powerwashers said its staff were devastated at the news.

In a post, CBD added: "James as many of our customers and suppliers will know, was a diligent, hardworking, infectious and lively soul, with a heart of gold. With his upbeat attitude and witty nature James kept everyone around him in high spirits."

"Each and every one of the staff are completely devastated and heartbroken at James passing.

"As our rock and our friend, James and his memory will forever be instilled in all of us, and we will look back on and cherish all the fond memories we have of him.

"The team at CBD would like to extend our sincere condolences to the McAuley Family, including James’s parents John and Jackie, his twin brother Brian, and his sisters Rachel, Ruth and Hannah."
